Translate a Version Externally

This article will guide you though how to create a translation of a document version using the XLIFF approach. For a high level overview of the external translation feature, please refer to External Translation using XLIFF.

Prerequisites

Before you can import a document to XLIFF you need to have permissions to:

  • View, add, and delete pages.
  • Add and delete attachments.

1: Export a Document Version to XLIFF

The first step to external translation is to export an XLIFF file of the source language.

Step 1: Navigate to the Document Manager

To find the Document Manager you can:

  1. Click Scroll Documents from the Apps section in your space sidebar.

  2. From the Document Library, click the document card of a document.

Or

  1. From a page in a document, click Document toolbox.

  2.  Click the cog icon.

Step 2: Download the XLIFF File

To download the XLIFF file, see the steps below:

  1. Locate the version you would like to translate and select Add translation.
  2. Select XLIFF Translation and click Next.
  3. Select the Source language.
  4. (Optional) Select the Target language.
  5. Click Export.

2: External Translation

Once the XLIFF ZIP file was downloaded in the previous step, you can submit it to your translation provider. Once they are finished translating the files, they will return the individual XLIFF files to you, with the translations added. If the files you receive from your translation providers aren't in a ZIP archive, make sure to zip them before uploading.

Make sure you create the ZIP with only the individual XLIFF files within it. When on MacOS, hidden system files can be included in the ZIP archive by accident. Learn more on how to prevent that.
