Create a Document Template

At the moment, creating and managing templates is only possible with a copy workaround.

In the future, we plan to offer a more complete Document Template feature to allow you to create your own custom templates from our dedicated Start from Template section.

→ Track the progress of this work using our public issue DOCS-108: Add Support for creating Custom Templates.

To create a template, you will first need to create a new document (which includes a working version) to define the details and page tree structure of your template.

Whenever you or someone in your team needs to base a new document on the details and structure of that template, they can copy this working version to continue modifying their document from the copy.

Define your template by creating a new document

  • Create a new document with start from scratch. This document will be your template.

  • Optional: In the first step of the document creation process, add a document title, summary, cover image or label. All these details can help you and others identify this document as a template.

Adding a ‘template’ label to your document will allow you and others to filter and overview all documents in your library that can be used as templates.

  • In the second step of the document creation process, organize the page tree to create a template page tree structure with parent and child pages. Here, add any pages and titles that you would like to make part of your template.

  • Click Save.

You will now find your document template in your Document Library. It’s now ready to use via the copy version option (next step).

You can also use document restrictions to define who can edit the template and who can only copy it.

Use your template by copying the working version of your template (document)

  • From the Confluence page, open the Document Toolbox and click the cog icon on the top right. This will take you to the Document Manager

  • Find the working version of your template document in the version table and select copy from the ••• menu.

  • In Step 1, 2 and 3: add and modify necessary details and edit the page tree structure to your preferences.

Please note: If you are copying to the same space, you will need to add a prefix to the prefix field. This is to prevent duplicate page titles, which are technically not possible within the same Confluence space.

  • Click Save.

You can start to edit pages to add content to your new document.
