Create a Document Template

At the moment, creating and managing templates is only possible with a copy workaround.

In the future, we plan to offer a more complete Document template feature to allow you to create your own custom templates from our dedicated Create from Template section.

→ Track the progress of this work using our public issue DOCS-108: Add Support for creating Custom Templates.

To create a template, you will first need to create a new document (which includes a Working version) to define the details and page tree structure of your template.

Whenever you or someone in your team needs to base a new document on the details and structure of that template, they can copy this Working version to continue modifying their document from the copy.

Define Your Template by Creating a New Document

  1. Create a new document by selecting Create new page tree, this document will be your template:

    1. Optional: In the first step of the document creation process, add a document title, summary, cover image, and/or label. All these details can help you and others identify this document as a template.

(tick) Tips: Add a “template” label to your document, this will enable you and others to filter and overview all documents in your library that can be used as templates.

    2. Click Next, this will take you to the Organize the page tree dialog.

  2. Click Add blank page (plus) to add empty pages that you would like to have in your template.

  3. Click Save when you are done adding pages.

You can also use document restrictions to define who can edit or copy the template.

Well done!

You have successfully created your first document template which can be found in the Document Library. Feel free to edit the pages in your document template, or add new pages at any time. In the next section below, you’ll find steps for how to create new documents based on your template.

      3. Click Next.

      4. Modify the last details such as the document title and add a prefix.
(info) Note: If you are copying the document into the same space, it’s important that you add a prefix. This is to prevent duplicate page titles, which are technically not possible within the same Confluence space.

      5. Click Copy when you are done.

Great!
