Why can't I get out of an inline comment marker when editing?

Symptom

In certain situations in the Confluence editor you can be prevented from adding content after an inline comment without it being included as part of the inline comment marker.

For example, this can occur when you have a table cell that only contains an inline comment, like this:

A table heading
A table cell - all text is marked with an inline comment.

Within the table body cell, when you hit return to begin adding additional text, the Confluence editor will assume that the new line should also be part of the content that is considered inside the comment marker, like this:

A table heading

A table cell - all text is marked with an inline comment.

Additional text that is still included as part of the inline comment marker.

Cause

This is actually a problem with the Confluence editor and not of the Inline Comments in the Editor app, but it will be visible inside the editor when the inline comment display is active.

Resolution

There remains two possible resolutions for this issue;

  • In such situations, you can use the Confluence Source Editor to clean up the storage format of the page.
  • Alternatively, you must ensure that you have text outside of the comment marker when you create a new inline comment.
