Cannot find transition

Symptoms

An issue does not get synchronized and appears in the troubleshooting section with the category 'Cannot find transition' and the message, e.g. 'Cannot find transition with the name Start Progress in status To Do'.

Cause

The known causes for this problem are:

  1.  The synchronization user does not have enough rights to execute transition
  2.  There is some condition on the transition that may prevent the synchronization user to perform the transition
  3.  The transition was deleted or renamed
  4.  The workflow button disappeard from the issue view page (see JIRAs Knowledge Base)

Resolution

The following solution should be tried in order to resolve this problem.

  1. Check if the synchronization user has enough rights to execute transition
    1. go to the project administration page of the interested project (the one on who failed the transition)
    2. click on Permission
    3. verify that the synchronization user is included in the groups allowed to perform "Transition Issues"
    4. if the synchronization user is not included here you need to grant the synchronization user this permission

  2. Check if the transition has some condition defined on it that prevent the synchronization user to execute the transition
    1. go to the project administration page of the interested project (the one on who failed the transition)
    2. click on Workflows
    3. edit the workflow for the corresponding issue type and look for the failing transition
    4. click on it and see if there is any condition
    5. click on "condition" and check if one of them is preventing the synchronization user to access the transition
    6. if yes, give the synchronization user the grant to execute the transition

  3. Check if the transition exists and has the correct name in the Workflow
    1. go to the project administration page of the interested project (the one on who failed the transition)
    2. click on Workflows
    3. edit the workflow for the corresponding issue type and look for the failing transition
    4. verify that it exists and has the right name
    5. if not, create or rename correctly the transition

  4. Follow the steps in this JIRA Knowledgebase article to see if you are affected and how to resolve the problem.

After fixing your configuration please perform a retry if you have only changed your JIRA or backbone configuration on the receiver project.
